Key takeaways

  • ATLAS.ti goes further on AI coding: AI Coding codes whole documents, which you then review.
  • NVivo puts AI in NVivo AI Cloud through the AURA assistant, which suggests and supports coding you approve; NVivo Desktop has no AI.
  • Both are owned by Lumivero since September 2024; MAXQDA is the main independent alternative.
  • ATLAS.ti costs $628 per year for a commercial seat and $107 per year for students; NVivo prices are shown in local currency on the Lumivero shop.
  • Keep QDA software when you need a line-by-line audit trail; consider DoReveal for commercial framework analysis with traceable quotes.

For AI-assisted coding, ATLAS.ti goes further: its AI Coding can code whole documents in one pass, and it comes with Windows, Mac and web access in one license. For collaborative teams that want structured, institution-wide workflows and AI that suggests rather than codes, NVivo is the safer choice, with its AI now in NVivo AI Cloud. Since September 2024 both are owned by Lumivero. If you are a commercial team that does not need a line-by-line coding audit trail, an AI-native analysis tool such as DoReveal may fit better than either.

NVivo and ATLAS.ti are the two most established qualitative data analysis (QDA) packages, and both now sell AI features. This guide compares them on AI coding, collaboration, Mac support, learning curve, pricing and audit trail, with every product fact checked on the vendors' own sites on October 31, 2026.

Which is better for AI-assisted coding?

Winner for this criterion: ATLAS.ti, because it automates more of the coding. ATLAS.ti's AI Coding breaks text into paragraphs, creates quotations and applies inductive codes to each one, and a slider in the desktop app sets how broad or fine the codes are. Intentional AI Coding lets you steer coding toward your research questions, and AI Summaries and Conversational AI help you explore the data.

NVivo takes a more controlled approach. AI lives in NVivo AI Cloud through AURA, the AI-powered Unified Research Assistant, which supports project setup, topic identification, coding and questions grounded in your project data. Lumivero describes the model as "AI helps. You decide": you review and approve or reject AI-assisted work. NVivo Desktop on its own does not include AI.

One caution applies to both. ATLAS.ti notes that AI Coding results "may differ for the same material" between runs. That matters if your method depends on reproducible coding.

Which is better for collaborative teams?

Winner for this criterion: ATLAS.ti for simple shared access, NVivo for structured institutional rollouts. ATLAS.ti desktop licenses include the web version, and multi-seat licenses (5 or 10 concurrent users) let a team share seats. NVivo offers the Collaboration Cloud add-on for real-time project sharing through a secure cloud workspace, and NVivo AI Cloud itself runs in the cloud. Universities that already have NVivo site licenses, training and support often find NVivo easier to standardize on.

Which works better on a Mac?

Winner for this criterion: a tie, with an edge to ATLAS.ti for mixed teams. NVivo Desktop is available for Windows and Mac. ATLAS.ti includes Windows, Mac and Web in the same desktop license, so a team with mixed machines can work from one purchase.

Which is easier to learn?

Winner for this criterion: depends on your institution. Both are full QDA packages with a real learning curve: codebooks, memos, queries and project structures take time to master. NVivo has a larger institutional footprint and more university training. ATLAS.ti's AI Coding gives newcomers a faster first pass, though the output still needs careful review.

How do NVivo and ATLAS.ti prices compare?

Winner for this criterion: ATLAS.ti for transparent published prices. As checked on October 31, 2026:

  • ATLAS.ti Commercial: $628 per year for 1 seat, $2,062 per year for 5 seats, $3,732 per year for 10 seats. Includes Windows, Mac and Web.

  • ATLAS.ti Student: $107 per year, or $55 for six months, with proof of student status.

  • NVivo AI Cloud: an annual plan that includes NVivo Desktop, 1,000 AURA AI credits per month, 200 paper searches per month and 5 hours of transcription per year.

  • NVivo Desktop: an annual or one-time license without AI, with add-ons for Collaboration Cloud and transcription in 43 languages.

The Lumivero shop shows NVivo prices in the visitor's local currency and by audience (researcher, commercial, government and non-profit, student), so check shop.lumivero.com from your region for an exact quote. ATLAS.ti prices are net and before tax.

Which has the stronger audit trail?

Winner for this criterion: both, which is why academic researchers rely on them. Both keep a record of which codes were applied to which passages, with memos and project history, so a supervisor, co-author or reviewer can check every coding decision. NVivo AI Cloud stresses that AI-assisted work can be followed back to its source evidence. ATLAS.ti groups AI-generated codes separately in an "AI Codes" group so they are easy to review.

Decision tree: if you need a line-by-line coding audit trail choose NVivo, ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA; if not, consider DoReveal

Who owns NVivo and ATLAS.ti?

NVivo was built by QSR International, which became part of Lumivero. In September 2024 Lumivero acquired ATLAS.ti, so the two best-known QDA tools now share an owner. They are still sold as separate products. MAXQDA, made by VERBI in Berlin, remains the main independent option if vendor concentration worries your institution. Our NVivo alternatives guide covers the wider landscape.

Where does DoReveal fit?

If your work needs a line-by-line coding audit trail, for a thesis, a publication or a formal methods review, stay with QDA software such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA. DoReveal is not a replacement for that.

DoReveal is built for a different job: commercial and applied teams who need defensible findings from interviews and focus groups quickly, without coding every line by hand. It is an AI qualitative analysis platform that turns interviews and focus groups into framework-based, quote-backed analysis:

  • Frameworks, not manual coding: 65+ native frameworks, including JTBD, emotional laddering, journey maps, grounded theory and persona development.

  • Traceable evidence: zero hallucinations, because every quote links back to the transcript moment and recording it came from.

  • Researcher control: every output can be reviewed and edited.

  • Per-interview pricing: DoReveal costs $7 per IDI, and bulk buying lowers it to $4.99 per interview when you buy 100 interviews ($499 in total), with unlimited users.

Academic teams use DoReveal too, including researchers at Drexel University and the University of Calgary, often alongside QDA software for applied projects. For a broader comparison of interview tools, see our interview analysis software guide.

NVivo or ATLAS.ti: which should you choose?

1. Doctoral student or academic researcher

ATLAS.ti's $107 student license with Mac, Windows and Web is good value. Choose NVivo if your university already licenses it and offers training.

2. University research team

NVivo if you need standardized collaboration and institutional support. ATLAS.ti if your team wants AI Coding and shared web access.

3. Commercial or applied research team

ATLAS.ti Commercial for formal coding. If you do not need line-by-line coding, compare an AI-native tool such as DoReveal on cost per project and time to findings.

4. Concerned about vendor concentration

MAXQDA is the independent alternative to both.

Keep QDA software for formal studies. Use DoReveal when you need framework analysis and traceable quotes fast.

NVivo vs ATLAS.ti FAQ
